Your child should be reading 15-20 minutes each night for practice. It is good to re-read books over to help your child build fluency and confidence as a reader. It is also important to practice high frequency words so they become "automatic" for them to read. You will find these on the weekly Literacy Overview along with spelling words. Spelling tests are given on Friday.
READING INCENTIVE PROGRAM - (Not implemented yet) Now that most of the children are reading, I have decided to start a reading incentive program at home. I know some of the students already read every night so I would like to reward them for it. Everyone should be reading on a daily basis. Please start with an easy book to build confidence. Then read books that are "just right"{books at their level}. I will send a weekly reading log home each Friday. Track the number of minutes they read each night and total it for the week. When they return it they will get a bobcat, dime and coupon. I will keep track of the minutes here at school. When your child gets 500 minutes they may choose a prize or book. They can continue to read throughout the school year, earning a prize for each 500 minutes that they read. Please encourage your child to participate. It will help them become successful, fluent readers.
